You know how scanlation ethics have been on my mind, right? With my blabbering about it... I even made a sketch of another reflection on the subject, but then I didn't finish it. I'm becoming more action and less speaking lately.
Anyway, when I heard that Holy Avenger was being reprinted, that was all it took to make me do what I believe is the right thing. I contacted the soon-to-be-publishers of HA, to know if I had their blessing. But they thought it'd be best not have scans around.
So the series will no longer be scanlated by me, and I'll no longer offer you the chapters done so far.

Master's Screen

And lemme tell ya, I just finished scanning all those magazines I'd borrowed, and now I'm moving on to some peripheral anthropophagous activities I'd put aside. That means no new chapters yet, but we're closer. And there'll be a lot of new posts in the blog.

Cassaro sues Pereira
I was gonna make this part of a Quickies, but it grew too big. Marcelo Cassaro (main writer of Holy Avenger) and Petra Leão (writer of a couple special issues of HA) sued José Roberto Pereira (writer of the first issues of The New Adventures of Mega Man) for calumny and defamation. Those are the only BR comics being scanlated nowadays, what about that!
It was hard to research, the press ignored it, Cassaro made no mention of it. In his incredibly dull podcast, Pereira says that the swollen-faced Cassaro sued him out of envy of his work. This month, they agreed that Pereira would have to do some community work.
I had to dig deeper. The post that started the process has been deleted, but comments were that it was badly written, antiethical, not a critic to Cassaro's work, but full of personal offenses.
It's not the first time he gets sued for that. Check out his blog's title and subtitle: OBSCURE WORLD: ONLY TRUTH INSULTS. "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." - Winston Churchill.
I couldn't make my mind about him. Although he seems to be a complete moron, from what I've heard of his podcast, he does have a few very intelligent and polemic opinions in some points.

Holy Avenger #15 - Battle of Archmages
Bad news: my vacations will be over next monday, and (for more than one reason) I probably won't translate, or even clean anything before I scan HA 16, 17, 20, 42 and HA Special 1, 2, 3, 4 (and maybe more).
Good news: I have someone interested in doing the typesetting, and a friend of mine said he'd be free to translate within a month or two. Even though changing translators isn't technically ideal (and I feel a little jealous), it would speed things up considerably, and we do have the structure to do so.

Star
Finally! A new release!
This is just a short story about Loriane, made a long time ago and reprinted in HA #12 and #13.
But lemme tell ya, it's hard being legal! Lately, I'm avoiding illegal stuff (ironically, a have never before in my life downloaded as much music as I do now). Then someone disappeared with my fake copy of Photoshop AGAIN! Fine, it was a good opportunity to do the right thing. I found out that it's quite hard living without PS.
First, I downloaded the GIMP. I had made some experiments with it before, with suspicious results, but, whatever, it was still the best free raster editor out there. But it has quite a crappy text tool. They're making a better one for the 2.8 update, which'll come out sometime this semester.
I also found out that Comic Sans really sucks (but PS made miracles with it). Luckily, there are quite good fonts out there, like Action Man and Komika Text.
So I downloaded a WHOLE BUNCH of softwares looking for a decent text tool, until I came across Inkscape. It was better than the others, but I wasn't satysfied yet. I kept searching, and then when I was about to finish downloading a 45 mega soft, my connexion crashed.
Just to give an idea, my connexion is supposed to be 500 kbps, but I'm thrilled when it goes over 100! At that moment, it was below 5. I was forced to keep trying with Inkscape. And what a surprise, I realized that it was everything I needed! And then I suddenly got my connexion back. ¬¬

Anyway, you're probably getting a couple new episodes very soon. And then we'll be back to the limbo for a while. Gotta fix problems with my HP scanner and make a whole batch of new scans (and maybe a second one) before I get back to translating cleaning, typesetting. But perhaps I'll have some more help by then!

Holy Avenger #13 - New Clothes Day!
Case you don't know Holy Avenger, it's an RPG inspired adventure series, drawn manga style, by Marcelo Cassaro, Erica Awano and a few others. Published from 1999 to 2003, it has won a couple HQ Mix and Ângelo Agostini Awards.
If you liked Cassaro's Victory*, then you might like HA. If you didn't like Victory, it's ok, I didn't like it either, and I think HA rocks.
Anyway, this series was being scanlated by Enxame, so go to their forum for older issues. Now it's a coop between us and them. =)
*First comic book totally made in Brazil published in the USA. Actually, it was an improved version of the Brazilian original.
